India software market

India enters 2027 with one of the world's largest developer communities and a software industry built around both global delivery and increasingly sophisticated product engineering.

  • GitHub reports 32 million developers in India in September 2026, the second-largest developer community in its published country table.
  • India's software services exports reached US$221.4 billion in FY26, up 8.2% year on year according to the RBI survey reported by IBEF.
  • IBEF, using NASSCOM data, estimates India's wider IT & BPM industry revenue at US$315.4 billion in FY26.
  • WIPO ranks India #38 globally in 2026, while its knowledge and technology outputs rank considerably higher at #15.
  • Clutch currently lists software-development companies in India around $25–$49/hour, but that is marketplace data, not a universal India rate and not Ascent Innovate Software pricing.

How large is India's software industry?

India enters 2027 with a large technology industry that spans IT services, business processes, software products, engineering, cloud, data and AI. Its scale is difficult to explain with one metric because revenue, exports and developer-community participation measure different kinds of activity. Looking at those figures together, without adding them into an artificial total, gives buyers a clearer view of the market.

IBEF's current IT and BPM industry analysis, using NASSCOM data, estimates US$315.4 billion in FY26 industry revenue, including US$246.4 billion in exports. Separately, the Reserve Bank of India's annual survey reports US$221.4 billion in software services exports in FY26, an increase of 8.2% year on year.

Those figures measure different scopes. The wider NASSCOM industry figure includes the broader IT and BPM ecosystem, while the RBI software-services survey measures a more specific export category. They should therefore be treated as complementary evidence rather than interchangeable numbers.

The scale also matters because India's software economy is no longer defined only by outsourced implementation. Product engineering, Global Capability Centres, cloud platforms, enterprise modernization, SaaS, cybersecurity, data engineering, and AI development now sit alongside the country's traditional IT-services industry.

How many software developers are in India?

GitHub reports 32 million developers in India in September 2026, making it the second-largest community in GitHub's published country table, behind the United States at 38.3 million. GitHub also reports that India's community added more than 10 million developers during the preceding year. These figures offer a useful picture of participation in modern development tools and repositories.

They are not a headcount of professional software engineers available for hire. GitHub's developer community includes experienced professionals, students, founders, open-source contributors, researchers, and hobbyists. The figures establish the scale of the ecosystem, while hiring quality must still be evaluated through relevant experience and actual delivery work.

How much does software development cost in India?

Clutch's current software-development pricing guide lists companies in India at approximately $25–$49 per hour in its location comparison.

That is a useful marketplace benchmark, but it should not be turned into a claim that "Indian developers cost $25–$49/hour." The figure describes companies represented in Clutch's dataset. Individual firms can price above or below it, and project structures may use fixed scope, milestones, retainers, dedicated teams, or other commercial models instead of a direct hourly rate.

The total cost also changes with what the provider is responsible for. A development engagement that includes product clarification, migration, integrations, cloud deployment, monitoring, testing, and post-launch work should not be compared directly with a rate for implementation alone.

For project-level planning, the custom software development cost guide explains how scope, integrations, team responsibility, and production requirements change a budget beyond any national hourly benchmark.

Why do global companies build software in India?

Global businesses work with Indian software teams for technical expertise, product engineering, enterprise systems, ongoing platform operations, and access to a wide talent base. The export data also shows how deeply the country's software-delivery sector is integrated into international business. Remote engineering and multi-country collaboration are established operating models rather than unusual arrangements.

The RBI's FY26 software-services survey reports US$221.4 billion in exports. The United States accounted for 54.1% of those exports, while Europe accounted for 31.8%. The United Kingdom represented 15.4%, within the broader European share.

The same survey says 91.7% of software services exports were delivered off-site.

That long history of remote delivery matters for international software work because cross-border communication, distributed engineering, client-owned systems, and remote production operations are not unusual operating models for the market.

Software companies serving those markets often design their communication, delivery processes, contracts and technical ownership around customers operating several time zones away. That operational experience can be as important to an international buyer as the size of the developer community.

How strong is India in AI development?

India's AI-development ecosystem extends across startups, product companies, global engineering centres, research, and teams embedding AI into business software. Several measurable signals help explain that breadth, including innovation outputs, demand for AI and data skills, and engineering work across cloud and platform systems. These indicators are more informative than trying to represent an entire national ecosystem with one label.

WIPO ranks India 38th overall in the 2026 Global Innovation Index but 25th for innovation outputs and 15th for knowledge and technology outputs. WIPO also says India has been an innovation overperformer relative to its level of development for 16 consecutive years.

India's technology industry is also moving toward more AI, cloud, data, cybersecurity, digital engineering, and platform work. Current GCC hiring evidence shows particularly strong demand around AI and data, platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, FinOps, and cybersecurity.

The shift is visible at major industry gatherings too. Bengaluru Tech Summit 2026 is explicitly organized under the theme "AI & Beyond", with dedicated AI and robotics programming alongside deep tech, semiconductors, health technology, startups, and enterprise innovation.

What are Global Capability Centres in India?

Global Capability Centres, usually shortened to GCCs, are operations established by international companies to perform technology, engineering, product, data, finance, research, or other strategic functions. In India, many GCCs now contribute to product development, AI and data engineering, cloud platforms and globally used enterprise systems. Their role extends well beyond traditional back-office support.

An October 2025 technology-talent report cited by IBEF described around 1,850 active GCCs employing more than 2 million professionals. The strongest hiring demand in that report included AI and data, platform engineering, cloud, FinOps, and cybersecurity.

STPI's separate GCC research says more than 90% of GCC activity has historically been concentrated in the six largest hubs: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Pune.

The significance for software buyers is that the Indian engineering market now serves several different kinds of demand at once: global enterprises building internal capability, startups building products, services firms delivering client software, and product companies building their own platforms.

Which Indian cities are major software hubs?

India's software industry is distributed across several major technology hubs rather than concentrated in a single city. Bengaluru has a highly visible product, startup, AI and GCC ecosystem, while Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Delhi NCR and Mumbai each have substantial markets with different strengths in enterprise systems, engineering, finance, cloud, products and industry-specific technology. Choosing a development partner therefore starts with team fit and relevant experience, not a city name alone.

STPI GCC report

Is software development moving beyond India's largest cities?

Yes, although the largest metros still dominate high-value technology activity.

STPI now operates 73 centres, 65 of them in Tier II and Tier III locations, reflecting a long-running policy of spreading software and technology activity beyond the largest cities.

Current industry reporting also points to growing technology activity in cities such as Coimbatore, Jaipur, Indore, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam, and other regional centres.

This does not mean every smaller city offers the same specialist depth as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, or Chennai. It means India's software labour market is becoming more distributed rather than remaining confined to a handful of metros.

What do software exports reveal about India's global role?

India's export figures point to an industry deeply connected with international software operations, not simply a collection of firms selling occasional development contracts. The RBI measures software-services exports separately from the broader IT and BPM revenue and export figures reported through NASSCOM and IBEF. Those totals should not be added together or described as interchangeable: they cover different kinds of activity.

The practical significance lies in established cross-border working relationships, remote delivery and the ability to support software used by customers in other markets. Industry revenue, exports, developer-community membership and employment each reveal something different about that capability. Reading those measures correctly offers a stronger picture of India's engineering economy than presenting one oversized market figure.

How large is India's cloud and data infrastructure market?

India's software industry increasingly operates alongside a substantial domestic cloud and data infrastructure base. That matters for companies building AI systems, high-volume applications, enterprise platforms, and products with specific data-location or latency requirements. Infrastructure capacity is a different measure from software revenue, but it helps explain the environment in which increasingly demanding applications are developed and run.

IBEF reported in August 2026 that India had nearly 27 million square feet across 164 data centres in H1 2026, with IT capacity above 1.8 GW. Mumbai-MMR remained the country's largest data-centre hub, followed by Chennai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad on the measures reported in that research.

That infrastructure growth is being driven by cloud usage, AI workloads, enterprise digitization, payments, data consumption, and demand for locally operated computing and storage.

For software buyers, this matters most when the project has requirements around cloud architecture, data residency, latency, AI compute, high-volume workloads, or production reliability.

What technology events show India's software ecosystem?

Large technology gatherings offer a different view of an ecosystem from developer totals or industry revenue. They bring product companies, researchers, investors, startups, enterprise buyers, and policymakers into the same conversations, making emerging areas of investment and engineering activity more visible. Event attendance alone cannot establish a country's technical capability, but the range of participants and subjects can show where collaboration is developing.

One example is Bengaluru Tech Summit 2026, scheduled for November 17–19 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre. Its published programme connects AI and robotics with deep technology, semiconductors, health technology, startups, and enterprise innovation.

The official event site lists:

  • 75+ countries
  • 1,000+ technology startups
  • 1,800+ exhibitors
  • 120+ sessions
  • 700+ speakers
  • 25,000+ delegates
  • 60,000+ business visitors

Its 2026 theme is AI & Beyond.

Numbers from an event should not be confused with software-market size. What they do provide is another signal of how the ecosystem connects startups, global technology companies, enterprises, researchers, investors, policymakers, AI teams, and deep-tech companies in one place.

What kinds of software are companies building in India?

India's technology sector includes software products, export services, Global Capability Centres, startup engineering, and in-house teams building systems for Indian and international customers. Work now ranges from enterprise modernization and industrial applications to SaaS, AI-powered business workflows, financial technology and production cloud platforms. Some common areas include:

SaaS and business platforms. Customer-facing and internal SaaS products, subscriptions, multi-tenant systems, administration, analytics, workflow products, and vertical software.

AI and workflow automation. Retrieval, document processing, language workflows, conversational systems, AI-assisted operations, data extraction, human-review systems, and AI features inside existing products.

Enterprise modernization. Legacy-system improvement, cloud migration, integration work, internal platforms, data engineering, and workflow modernization.

Fintech and financial software. Payments, lending, banking technology, reporting, risk systems, finance workflows, and customer platforms.

Engineering and industrial software. Automotive, manufacturing, logistics, telecommunications, embedded systems, engineering workflows, and platform development.

Cloud and production engineering. Infrastructure, deployment, observability, security, platform engineering, data systems, and reliability.

At Ascent Innovate Software, our own work sits mainly around SaaS development, AI integration and workflow automation, cloud and production systems, and improving existing software. That gives us a direct view of one part of this broader market, especially where founders or operating businesses need a product taken from an early or incomplete state into dependable use.

Why can Indian software companies be cost-efficient?

Indian software firms draw on an extensive engineering talent base, established international delivery practices, and deep experience in product development, cloud infrastructure, integration, and enterprise systems. That combination can make delivery efficient: experienced teams may resolve familiar technical problems faster, work across several disciplines without unnecessary handoffs, and maintain continuity from development into production. Competitive operating costs can be an additional advantage, but they do not explain the market's engineering capability on their own.

The range of companies is also wide, from specialists in a particular product or technology to multinational engineering organizations. Buyers should compare relevant experience, the people assigned, communication, production ownership, and the outcomes a team can demonstrate. Those details make an assessment fairer than assuming either low price or high price is a measure of quality.

Is India a good place to hire software developers in 2027?

India is a strong place to find software-development talent in 2027. Its ecosystem includes skilled individual specialists, startups and product companies, focused engineering teams, major global technology firms, and established capabilities in SaaS, cloud, AI, data and enterprise software. International buyers can choose among different team structures and specializations rather than treating the country as one uniform outsourcing market.

The right hiring decision still depends on the individual team. Relevant project work, technical judgment, clear communication, security practices and responsibility after launch are useful criteria in any country, including India. The checklist below turns those principles into questions that can be verified in a real engagement.

Hiring in India

What should you check before hiring a software team in India?

The country provides a large software market. The actual hiring decision still needs to be made at company and team level.

Relevant delivered work

Look for software that demonstrates responsibility similar to the product, workflow, integration, or technical problem you need solved.

The actual delivery team

Understand who will make architecture decisions, build the product, review it, and remain involved after the initial sale.

Communication

Clear written updates, visible blockers, direct technical discussion, and predictable response patterns matter more than simply sharing a time zone.

Scope transparency

The proposal should make the first-release boundary, assumptions, exclusions, and change process understandable.

Technical ownership

Repositories, cloud accounts, production credentials, domains, and important third-party services should have a clear ownership model.

Production responsibility

Clarify whether the engagement includes testing, deployment, monitoring, migrations, recovery, and post-launch support.

Security practices

Ask how access, credentials, production data, dependencies, secrets, and deployment permissions are handled.

Commercial clarity

Compare proposals with equivalent responsibility rather than assuming the lowest hourly rate creates the lowest total project cost.

Before moving on

India provides scale and choice. The quality of the outcome still depends on the team you select and the responsibility they are prepared to own.

For examples of how scope, product decisions, and production responsibility are documented in delivered software, see the Work pages. The Pricing page explains how those responsibilities shape a project-specific estimate.
